Alcove units in Victorian and Edwardian houses
The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are made for built-in furniture. A classic layout is a low cupboard with a solid top and two or three floating shelves above, but it can be full-height shelving, a desk or a drinks cabinet.
Every alcove in an old house is a slightly different shape, so each unit is measured and scribed on site. Shelves are fixed into the wall so they carry books without sagging.
Media walls
A media wall hides the TV bracket, cables and sockets inside a built-out wall, with a recess for an electric fire and often shelving or cupboards either side. I build the frame, board it, fit the fire and finish the wall ready for paint.
Bookcases and library walls
For people with a lot of books, a full wall of shelving, or shelving that runs around a doorway or a whole room, makes a real library. Shelf spacing is planned around your books, with deeper cupboards at the bottom if you need them.

What are alcove units made from?
Usually moisture-resistant MDF with a timber or MDF top, which gives a smooth painted finish and stays stable. Solid timber tops or shelves are possible if you prefer.
Can you install the electric fire in a media wall?
I build the media wall and fit the fire into the recess. Where a new electrical circuit or socket is needed, it is done by a qualified electrician.
Do you paint the units?
Yes, units are filled, sanded and painted, in a colour of your choice or to match the walls.
