Bespoke carpentry, made to measure

Carpenter in West and South West London

Built-in furniture, handmade doors, wall panelling, shelving and all the carpentry repairs a London home needs, measured, made and fitted by me, David, with the care of someone who has worked in these houses since 2005.

Bespoke carpentry for period and modern homes

Most London houses are not square. Victorian and Edwardian walls lean, floors slope and no two alcoves are the same width. Off-the-shelf furniture leaves gaps; carpentry made on site fits the room exactly, from the skirting to the coving.

I build in MDF and timber, scribe every unit to the walls and floor, and finish with paint so the new joinery looks like it was always part of the house. If you want, I paint it too, so you deal with one person from the first measurement to the final coat.

Doors, windows and the small jobs

A good part of my work is the things that annoy you every day: doors that stick, windows that will not close, a lock that needs replacing, a broken sash cord or a rotten sill. I repair what can be repaired and make new parts when it cannot.

I also make doors from scratch, including front doors in the style of the house and glazed internal doors. Small jobs are welcome; many of my regular clients started with one.

Wall panelling

Panelling is one of the quickest ways to give a room character: full-height panels in a living room or bedroom, a dado-height scheme in a hallway or a panelled wall behind the bed. I set out the panels to suit the room, fit the mouldings and fill and paint everything so the joints disappear.

What clients say

I have been contracting David for approximately 8 years on home renovations including bathroom refit, painting, decorating, flooring, garden, carpentry and more. Not only is David's work of a high standard, he goes above and beyond for me and my family, always making the time to fit us into his busy schedule. I trust David implicitly and will continue to use his services for years to come. He's incredibly hard working and trustworthy.

We are currently working with David on lots of home improvements: painting, built in wardrobes, cupboards and much more. He has been a complete delight to work with. He is a lovely gentleman who takes a real pride in his work and everything is possible! His attention to detail is amazing and he runs his business extremely well with regular updates on his process and costings for the project.

Ginny

A few years ago I looked up Gumtree for a reliable skilled handyman. I came across David and saw photos of some of his work on the site. Ever since David has done various jobs of painting, decorating, building wardrobe, a summerhouse, etc for us. I always felt confident and reassured that he will do an excellent job and more importantly trusted him to come and go even when I was at work and felt assured all was in good hands and that is priceless.

We have worked with David for many years. He was recommended by a friend and we have subsequently recommended him to many of our friends. David has done carpentry for us (built us an integrated wine rack and wrap around bookshelves that go all around our lounge) and has also painted our whole house inside and outside. David will give you a quote instantly and stick to it. Work is always done on time and he really looks after your home.

Client, family home

The term 'Handyman' does not really reflect the work David does. He has been my go-to person since I found him about 8 years ago. He is the ultimate professional who takes pride in his work. He arrives on time, assesses the work and gets on with it. I call him to do all my repairs and decorating whether indoors or outdoors. The one time I called someone else to do something for me, I had to call Dave to repair the botched job. He is so precise in what he does and very tidy afterwards.

Client, long-standing

Very very pleased to recommend David. He has done all sorts of work for us at two different locations, including panelling, coving, painting, repairs, shelving, tiling etc. It's brilliant knowing I can totally trust him, the work standard is excellent, and he's so flexible with such a proactive and positive attitude.

Questions

Carpentry & joinery: common questions

How much does a carpenter cost in London?

It depends on the job, the materials and how much finishing is needed, so I do not give prices without seeing the work. Send a few photos and the measurements on WhatsApp or book a visit, and you get a clear quote that I stick to.

Do you make the furniture in a workshop or on site?

Most built-in furniture is made and fitted on site, so every piece is cut to the real walls and floor. Doors and some parts are prepared in advance.

Can you paint the carpentry as well?

Yes. I am a painter and decorator as well as a carpenter, so I can fill, sand and paint new joinery and the rest of the room, without you having to book a second trade.

Do you take on small carpentry jobs?

Yes. Fixing a door, putting up shelves or repairing a window are all welcome. If you have a list of small jobs, I can usually do them in one visit.
